Idea update

Image
Due to the struggle of finding the right people to collaborate on my film opening, i have changed my idea slightly. I decided to just have the main character on my film opening instead of various characters, this is because I personally think its better to keep the audience interested in the main event, if i decide to have various characters i my film opening the audience could lose the focus on the main event and become distracted. I also decided to do this because by having only the main character in the film opening, it will make the context much more dramatic and the audience will not loose the focus.  I am going to keep my idea of the main character getting bullied, but instead of having to show the girl getting bullied at school, i am going to show the girl dead in the woods, i decided to do the because it will create suspense and it will be attention grabbing.

Additional Research

Image
"Bully" I decided to research deeper into the theme of bullying to show my understanding of the context and to have more ideas for my own film opening. I looked at various films online, I used google and film websites to help me find the best bullying films and instead of a film i found a very interesting documentary that helped me with my own ideas and gave me inspiration about different shots and camera angles.  The colours and font used in this image are very attention grabbing, the yellow and red combined create an alarming image, as if it is a warning.  The connotations behind this image is what really matters and what it conveys to the viewer.  This image captures the audience's attention straight away, it helps to convey the warning of the situation.  This additional research has really helped me to develop my ideas even further and to understand the context of different films. Once I start shooting my film opening, the ideas and the inspi...

Group update video 1

Due to the changing of the weather, the filming had to be re scheduled for christmas holidays , also because some of the people participating in the filming process will not be available due to school and work, so the filming will start during the christmas holidays because it is accessible to everyone.   My main idea slightly changed, firstly i was going to do a film opening where i had different characters on it, but i thought that by just having the main character in and not revealing the other characters would keep the audience more interested. I also decided to change the setting, props and costume to fit around the new context of my film opening . In this video above I explain all the details and further ideas and updates:

Props

Image
The first and most significant prop of my film opening is the main characters Diary , here are all her secrets. This diary represents who she is , and when is taking away from her, it affects her in many ways.  Diaries have the connotation of a book in which one keeps daily record of events and experiences , it is to be kept a secret. This prop symbolizes very much to the film opening because it is one of the main reasons that causes conflict between the characters on the film opening. The phone symbolizes the bullying in my film opening so it is really important to show the impact that it creates on all of the characters to then be able  to convey the  main idea of what my interpretation  of what bullying is . The phone also represents   my  intended audience because, mobile phones are mainly used by teenagers that are constantly texting each other, and using their phones to do different things throughout ...

Locations

Image
One of the first and important locations is a school , as the main character in my film is bullied I need to show where it starts and why. Most bullying situations occur firstly at a school so my idea was to have my first shot be at a school and then build into the climax to keep my intended audience interesting on what was happening. This is also a good way to show mise en scene and the impact of it.  This location was supposed to be for my other idea, of my media product. As my idea changed, I changed the location in order to be able to create another context for my media product.  This is the updated version of my new chosen location. I thought it would be better to change the location to a more urban setting, to highlight my context and the story line.  Changing the locations has been affected by the change of weather yet I have chosen carefully dates and times to be able to shoot my media product.

Animatics

Image
Animatic are animated storyboards. They are used for various purposes depending on the medium for which they are being produced. Animatics are used every day in the advertising industry to test commercials. They're used to preview scenes of live-action films before they are show. You'll also find animatics in the pre-production stages of animation and in the video game industry.  Once I tried to create my own Animatics, I had so much fun with working with different tools and just watching is as a real film opening. The music that I added to it, it the music that I will be using for my own film opening so I thought it would be good to just dd the music to make it seem more like the real thing.

My Production logo

Image
Once I looked at Production logos from other film companies, I began to work with after effects and photoshop to experiment the different features and explore the best options for my production logo. I wanted my production logo to be very simple but to also reflect my film genre through the use of after effects. Working with photoshop for the first time was very complicated, not knowing what tools to use and which ones are the best to be used was very challenging but once I became to watch tutorials on YouTube helping me how to use photoshop; was really helpful and it helped me improve my editing skills.  After effects is  much easier programme because there is many different tools, for example making the text move or making the back round itself move and creating illusion. After various attempts, I then decided to use after effects because the content of the programme was much easier to use and the end result was much more satisfying then when I used photoshop. Explori...

Diegetic and Non Diegetic sounds

Production logo reserch

Image
Before I even start my own personalised company logo for my film opening, I decided to do a little bit of research to understand more the use of a logo and what they resemble.  A Production logo is a logo used by movie studios and television production companies to brand what they produce, production logos are normally seen at the beginning of a theatrical movie.  Logos are either purely graphic or composed of the name of the organisation.  A logo is the visual identity of a company, so the design is a very important area. The design of a company logo, will represent the company as a whole, so the colours used, the font, the name has to be carefully chosen by the company funders to represent them. Colour is a also a key element in logo design and plays and important part role in brand differentiation, colours tend to have connotations and associations so when choosing the colour for the logo, it has to be very well evaluated to fit in with what they are trying to conv...

Prelim Storyboard

Image
STORYBOARD  This is our prelim storyboard, it was created before we even started filming because it would helps us decide the shots and camera angles.  The first shot is a wide camera angle, a long medium shot of me walking on the school corridor towards the classroom.  The second shot is a match on action camera angle of me opening the door, and then it cuts to the close up of my hand on the door handle when opening it.  The third shot is a medium shot of me walking through the door, and I then sit down and speak with my friend.  The fourth shot is a shot reverse shot camera angle of me and my friends having a conversation about school.  The fifth sho t is a wide shot of me walking away from the classroom and then that is the end of the preliminary task.

Film opening storyboard

Image
This is my film opening story board, i drew it so it would reflect exactly how i want my film opening to look like, the chosen camera angles. The production logo comes on the screen and then it cuts to black to begin the film opening, the first shot then there is a high angle of a dead girl on the floor, and then we have a medium close up of her sister crying and reading the letter that the girl wrote before committing suicide. shot two cuts to black and "6 months before" appears on the screen, shot 3 then is a shot reserve shot of the girl and her sister talking about her going to a new school, then in shot 4 it gets a little more rough to the girl, there is a match on action and a medium close up of the actions. Shot 5 is a medium shot of the girl getting bullied and then a close up of the girl picking her books up from the floor,  shot 6 happens when the girl gets home crying, shot reverse shot and then a medium close up of the girls face. Shot 7 is a medium close ...

Video production Risk Assessment

Reece (Location)

Recce A Recce is a pre-filming or pre-photography visit to a location. The purpose of the visit is to decide upon the suitability of the location for shooting. You will need to comment upon the access to necessary facilities, assessment of potential lighting and or any potential issues with sound. You should devise and complete a table similar to the one shown, ensuring that you include appropriate detail. Potential Locations - Description Photograph Is it suitable – how? Why? (Access, Lighting, Sound ) Additional   Comments / Observations School - school corridors and school playground.   The school will be the perfect place to film because the natural lighting and the back sound of the kids, will allow me to add the realistic theme to my film opening.   Most of the scenes will be filmed at the school.  House - bedroom/toilet  The bedroom will be the place of closure, so ...

Script for Film Opening

" Its a strange strange world, sometimes you think you are strong enough to go out there and face all the things that stop you from being happy but in reality.. you are not strong.  This past few months of my life caused me endless pain. " "Two teens walk down the stairs and see cici, they push her to the floor, step on her folders and laugh while they walk away.  Teen1 :- Next time you should watch where you're going.  Teen2:- She must be blind, HAHAHAHAHAHA Both:- Move away from us.  Cici picks her things up and cries while runs home." She enters the toilet and sits there crying silently.  Cici's sister:- Cici, are you in there?  Is everything ok? Cici:- ( crying ) I'm fine, just please leave me alone.  Cici's sister:- Cici... Dinner is in the table, I will be waiting for you.  Cici:- ok...  Cici enters her room, sits on her bed cleaning the tears on her face, she opens her school folders and she sees a how it's all broke...

Costume Research

Image
The costume chosen for my film opening will not be very extreme, as my film opening is linked to the everyday life my costume will be very casual and teenage like.  As my film opening will be associated with teenagers, the costume and props will be more elaborated but yet very simple. As I discussed with the people participating in my film opening, and also helping me film about the costume they think would be more suitable for the teenage characters, we chose casual and very simple. The bullies particularly could be wearing exaggerated clothes as it resembles seeking attention, and for the girl being bullied we can make her wear more props than actually clothes, as the clothes will be very simple the props could be there to resemble who she is.  As our target audience will be mainly teenage girls, I have asked some friends to give me feedback on my chosen costume for the film opening.  The feedback was very positive but perhaps we could swap the characters costumes and...

Ideas and Inspirations

Image
A GIRL LIKE HER  A girl like her is a film that really influenced my ideas, it gave me the chance to get inspirations and then later on in my film opening to incorporate my interpretation of what bullying is. Bullying is a really important matter, so being able to do a film opening about it and express how i feel about it, it's great. "A girl like her" is about a girl that gets bullied at school and also through the internet, she has a hidden camera on her and every bullying scene was filmed, and later on showed to the police when the girl attempts to commit suicide. The clear shots of the film, and the constant miss-en-scene capture my attention because it was really simple yet it had a really big significance. The process of my filming will be very carefully done because I want to reflect my interpretation of what bullying is through my camera angles and my shots.  Watching various movies, that include verbal or physical violence really inspired me to make my o...

Video Film Opening - Idea Update

IDEA UPDATE My idea is to deliver a message to my intended audience and make them think about what is happening, self reflection after watching a film is very important. Once you think about what is happening in the film, you start to enjoying  and  focusing more. My idea for the film opening, is to begin with a teenage girl that took a whole bottle of pills and committed suicide, then it will cut to black and the voice over will go back in time, where shots of what lead her to commit suicide begin to appear.  The main character, the girl that attempts to commit suicide will be me, and I will have another 3 characters that are the antagonists of the film opening. My film opening revolves mainly around bullying and how I see it, my interpretation is going to be seen in my Film opening.

3 point lighting research

Low-key lighting is a style of lighting for photography, film or television. It is a necessary element in creating a chiaroscuro effect. BBFC ( British Board of Film Classification )

Film title fonts research

Image
The cyberbully film cover is quite empty and I would say isolated, the girl sitting in the middle is really effective because it defines the word in big bold letter Cyberbully. The girl sitting in the middle is alone, and seems very scared and has a laptop near her, the imagery of bullying is being communicated to the audience through the person shown in this cover. "Words can hurt" in black letter which makes you spot it straight away because everything else in the image is in white, perhaps this was done to catch the audience's attention in that particular phrase. The background is very embracing and comforting, the colour blue almost makes it seem like a peaceful atmosphere because blue as a colour has the connotations of being associated with depth and stability, which is the juxtaposition of the context of this film. Blue is also associated with confidence, faith and trust, but the blue background and the faded words also in the background juxtapose because the wor...

Primary audience Research (Qualitative Data)

Qualitative Data: What film genre do you enjoy the most? and why? Answer 1- "I really enjoy drama, because every film with drama has a climax. The climax creates curiosity among the audience, and thats what excites me the most because it is also interesting to have a moment in the film where you don't know whats about to happen next" Answer 2- "Horror is the best, it just has every element to scare you but also make you think. It's great."  How old are you? Answer 1- "I am 17" Answer 2- "I am 16"  Do you enjoy watching movies at home or at the cinema? and Why? Answer 1- "Watching it at home is definitely more comfortable and cosy, you can just enjoy it with you family in the sofa with some blankets but I rather go to the cinema simply because the film itself looks more realistic and at the cinema there's no distractions."  Answer 2- "I would say both are good, but the cinema definitely pr...

Textual Analysis

Image
For my textual analysis, I'm going to be looking at the film cyber bullying simply because it links to my own idea.  To begin with, this medium close up on the girl connotes intensity and concentration, this suggests the common stereotype that teenagers are addicted to the internet.  The girl's stern facial expression connotes distress and alarm, implying something is bothering her on the laptop. The placing of the laptop towards the right of the shot connotes a presence of the online world, as the converged device gives access to online risks.  This particular shot encourages the audience to keep watching as it becomes interesting at first sight, the internet has  negative and positive impact on people around the world, so the intended audience  for this particular film would be teenagers but also adults that are already parents might feel interested to watch, so the audience can vary from teenagers to adults.  This shot connotes iconography o...

Institutional Research

Institutional Research:   My chosen film was Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory , which was produced by Warner bros. Warner bros: is an American entertainment company owned by Time warner.  Other films they also took part in are; Suicide Squad, The Lego movie and Storks. Their audience is mainly young children, because most of their collaborations and made film are fantasy or adventure. It suits a young audience because the Warner Bros, know exactly what their audiences are looking for and what is going to capture their attention. The audience can vary in gender, it can be girls but mostly boys as the films made are adventure and boy fantasy. The Warner Bros is an independent company, their name originates from the four founding Warner brothers.  Warner's bros is a very independent company, which produces films and corporate with other companies to make their films successful. Warner bros has subsidiaries including turner entertainment.  In my opinion Warne...

Analyzing Cinematography

Image
The Conjuring This camera angle is called long shot (LS), and it was used in the conjuring to reveal the character and build the atmosphere of fear and horror. This LS was used to set the scene and help the audience to understand the characters and also the context of the film. This camera angle can also be known as establishing shot . In the conjuring the medium long shot was used so the audience has a closer look at the facial expressions as well as the body language of a certain character. The main focus is the context of the film and the situation the character is in.  The medium long shot also makes the audience feel closer to the character as they are exposed to being so close. This camera angle is called medium close up, it allows the audience to have a deeper understanding of the characters and see their facial expressions. If the conjuring used this camera angle I assume they wanted to audience to focus in only one subje...

Mise-en-scene (Denotation, Connotation.)

Image
1. Denotation: The images of the video are quite old, and faded. The first thing I spotted was Buildings, the camera angle is birds-eye-view. The videos and images are fading one on top of the other.  The colour of the images and videos are very antique and hardly clear to see.   I see Guns and soldiers, people all together in just one place.  the colours, The colours remain the same throughout the whole video and the images are very blurry.  There is a strike happening in the video, and the police is also there. I see men in suits and important buildings. 2. Connotation: The buildings shown in this video seem very important, because they keep appearing throughout the video.  The buildings might suggest an important event or place. The dark, antique and faded colours give the sensation that this event happened in the past, due to the dark colours I would also suggest that the event happening in the video might be obscure. The people s...

DRAMA GENRE  Drama film is a genre that relies on the emotional and relational development of realistic characters. While drama film relies heavily on this kind of development, dramatic themes play a large role in the plot as well. Often, these dramatic themes are taken from intense, real life issues. Whether heroes or heroines are facing a conflict from the outside or a conflict within themselves, Drama film aims to tell an honest story of human struggles.  My main chosen genre would be drama but I also have a sub-genre which is Tragedy, which fits in the drama genre. Tragedy drama is a genre wherein the downfall of the character is caused by a flaw within the character. While tragedy dramas sometime put the character in extraordinary circumstances, this genre is really about the self-destructive behaviour of the character.  Drama and tragedy are my chosen genres because I though about keeping my film opening quite realistic and ...

Preliminary Exercise

Image
For the preliminary exercise we had to incorporate shot reverse shot, 180 degree rule and also match and action. The exercise was successful because we all worked well together as a group to keep the camera angles clear and basic, and to complete the task. As it was our first time filming with a good camera, we had to be careful to keep the camera still and spot all the actions in a clean shot. The camera had many tools, but as a group we went over it and helped each other out through the process of filming the preliminary exercise.

Prelim Script

Two young girls catch up on a conversation on the first day of school. The two sit in a classroom and get very entertained.   The first girl walks through the corridor (wide shot) and she calmly opens the classroom door (close up on handle) and then she walks to the table where she sees her friend (wide shot). (Establishing shot) Girl 1: Hey, are you okay? ( Shot Over the shoulder ) Girl 2: Hey, yeah am good you? Girl 1: am fine, thanks. How was your summer holiday? Girl 2: Oh, it was really good. I went to Spain what about you? Girl 1: That's great! And I stayed in England, I was working all summer. Girl 2: That's good. Well I have to go now, I will see you later. Girl 1: Okay, see you later. Girl 1 walks out(Wide Shot).
