Evaluation Question 5
5. How did you attract/address your target audience?
Firstly, once I began to research about different genres before I began making my film. I researched different genres and the relatable audiences to specific genres. I also looked up at websites that would help me see which films were most seen last year and what the target audience was. Researching different genres and looking at different audiences and how they match different films really helped me to decide which genre I was going for. I also watched trailers of popular horror films done in 2016; Don't breathe, The forest and The Darkness. All of this films inspired me to create a horror drama film, because of the intense shots and the adrenaline of not knowing what is going to happen next. As a teenager, I fit into my target audience, this means that I could use my initial thoughts and ideas about Horror films to attract the audience.
After deciding what genre I was going for, i needed to research what other people my age liked about horror films or what they did not like about them, so i wrote a questionnaire and handed it in to a few people I selected from my class to help me compare my thought with their opinions, and then create a successful media product. Once I collected all the questionnaires, I selected three people from my class and showed them the opening sequence of The Darkness, to see their reaction and have a more detailed answer about what they thought. Then, everything that I read on the questionnaires I wrote it down as a list and I brain stormed the answers so I could expand on the ideas and come up with a good story line. When I began to produce my media product, I also thought about using various film techniques to attract my intended audience; Quick sum cuts, to create adrenaline and curiosity. The extreme close ups, to portray emotions and draw the audience in, Mise-en-scene was also very important to make the audience relatable to the character on my media product, as the protagonist was also a teenager, it creates more interest within the audience. The set and dark lighting which links to the original genre of my media product; horror, which is something my target audience have said they like about horror films as it creates tension and makes things unexpected. I think I was very successful in attracting my target audience as I have shown my media product to some people in my class and asked for their feedback. Overall, the feedback was very positive but I also asked for areas to improve in and things that I could've done better, but members of my target audience they really liked it, and it was very interesting. They said that the slow and emotional music I included in my media product made it very interesting and sinister but I also received feedback on what I could of done better for example, I could of included more characters in the film opening to make it more attention grabbing. All the comments and even the feedback were very positive, and it will help me in the future if I decide to make another film.
